The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
