Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior political figure stated the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
